Polimata

Polimata is a non-commercial Polish-language encyclopedia where every article is written from saved copies of sources from universities, research agencies and public institutions. A separate checker verifies the text sentence by sentence before it goes live. Knowledge is organised into 22 realms in five groups, and articles connect along axes of time, places, people and collections.

The Challenge

The internet is flooded with unsourced text, and an encyclopedia only makes sense when every sentence can be checked. It needed a structure where an article has one place in the tree yet can be reached through time, place, person or collection, and a site that reads like a textbook, does not track the reader and does not depend on anyone else's servers.

Our Solution

A copy of every source saved before the article is written, and the text verified sentence by sentence
An index generator: section lists, pages for places and people, a timeline, collections and a list of topics still to write, all built from article headers
Attachments of every kind with their licence: images, video, audio, PDF previews and files
A Quartz v4 site: search, a section tree, a link graph, a table of contents, backlinks and an article preview on link hover
A dark mode and a reader mode
Its own logo, local Literata, Cormorant Garamond and IBM Plex Mono fonts and KaTeX formulas
No requests to outside servers and no analytics
