What you enter
755 for the file script.sh

chmod 755 for a script, step by step

Each of the three digits is a sum of three permissions, separately for the owner, the group and others. The tool gives the same mode in both notations. The result is computed by the same function the tool at the top of the page uses, every time the page is shown.

You enter

Mode
755
File
script.sh

Three digits

u
Owner: 7 = 4 + 2 + 1 (read, write, execute)
g
Group: 5 = 4 + 1 (read, execute)
o
Others: 5 = 4 + 1 (read, execute)
What the tool does

Read is 4, write 2, execute 1. A digit is their sum.

The rwx form

ls -l
-rwxr-xr-x
What the tool does
